ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SAILOR'S DEATH. Dr. M'Artliur, S.M., held an inquest yesterday concerning the death of Albert Olson, a sailor who had died in llie Public Hospital on Wednesday last. Constable'- M'Kelvey deposed that, on February 24, ho was informed that Olsen was "in tho horrors from drink" on board the American barquentino Koko Head. He arrested Olsen and lodged Irm in the cells at Lambton Quay. On February 25 Olsen was taken before liio Magistrate's Court, and, owing to his condition, was remanded for a week's curative treatment. Dr. Woodhouse stated that on February ,23 Olsep .was admitted.to .the Public Bus;uita,l- suffercii..;.fromi-,« pneumonia. On 'March '5' there were definite' symptoms of typlioid fever. Olsan improved for a while, but later got worse, and on March 19 ho died. The verdict was that- death had been caused by pneumonia and typhoid fever. MOTOR-CAR MISHAP. • On Saturday a motor-car driven by C. E. Wyatt, of the London Dental Co., capsized while rounding the coruor- front Tinakori Road into Molesworth' Sheet. Mr. Wyatt and Mr. A. B. Corrigaai, of Hill Street, who also was in tho vehicle, were thrown out. The former received a severe bruise on the left side of tile face, and several flesh wounds, while tit© latter escaped with some flesh wounds, on tho limbs.
BODY FOUND IN HARBOUR. A body, which is supposed to be that of James Gavanagh, was found floating in the harbour yesterday. Deceased ha<\ bean a fireman on the steamer Wairuna. Tit was paid off on March 15, and had expressed. the intention of going to Lyttelton. On Maroh 17, Charles Perchard, another fireman on tho vessel, reported to the police that Gavanagh had not returned to the Wairuna for his belongings, and had not gotle south by tho Mararoa., Perchard added that he feared that something had happened to Gavanagh. The body found is that of a mediumheight, stout man of between 30 and -10 years. In the clothing, were a fireman's dischargo, and a ticket to Lyttelton, both made out in tho name of .T. Gavanagh. £3 35., also, was found in tho pockets. A FALL "DOWNSTAIRS. Peter Peterson, a Union Company employee, fell down the stairs in tho company's/buildings on Saturday night and received some severe injuries to his head. A mail who was working oil the premise? when Peterson started for home, shortly before midnight, states that ho heard Peterson going downstairs. Ho heard a rush, and then a thud. He went to Petereoh's assistance and found, him badly cut about tho head and dazed. Peterson is at present tho public hospital. DESPONDENCY AND SUICIDE. (By Telesranh.—Press Association.! Christchurch, March 23. (Jharles Carter, a painter by trade, and o. single man, was found about 3 a.m. icday lying on tho ground in his Inckrard with his throat'eut and quite dead. Deceased is alleged to have had, snine drink on Saturday, despito the fact that a prohibition order is in force ngniiiiit liini. ■ About threo weeks ago, ho met with an accident, and is said to have been despondent ever since.
SUCCUMBED TO INJURIES. Christchurch, March 23. Miss Mary Ellon .Hodgeman, who was knocked down by the engine of 'in incoming train nt Islington on Friday, dic-d at tho hospital early this morning. DEATH FROM CARDIAC SYNCOPE. Christchurch, March 1!3. Alfred Talbot Vickcry, a retired railway servant, 49 years of age, droped rt his residence, Sydenham, this afternocn. At tho inquest the evidence of the wife of deceased and of a neighbour was .alien. Deceased had been attended by a medicnl man who is at present absent from tbo Dominion, and from whom consequently no certificate as to the causo of death vould be obtained. A verdict was rororded of. death due from cardiac synyipe.
