PERSONAL ITEMS.

The Hon. W. F. Massey (Prime Minister) and the Hon. R. H. Rhodes are at Ashburton. The Hon. W. H. Herries is at Rawene, and the Hon. W. Fraser is at Gisborne. The Hon, A. L, Herd man will arrive from Christchurch to-day. Tho Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, the Hon. H. D. Bell, and the Hon. Dr. Pomare are in Wellington. Mr. Fisher leaves for the south on Saturday.

Tlie Ministers in Christchurch vester-day-thc Prime Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey), the Minister for Justice (the Hon. A. L. Herdman), and the Post-master-General (the Hon. R, Hcaton Rhodes) —spent a quiet morning. Departmental business occupied some of their time, but 110 public deputations waited 011 any of the Ministers. The Primo Minister visited tho Addington Yards, and spent some timo looking at the stock, and conversing with many old friends that he met. Messrs. Massey and Rhodes' left by tho midday express for Ashburton. Tile Hon. A.'L. Herdman visited tho building at Addington at one timo known as tho Samaritan Home, which is now used as a place of detention for female prisoners. In tho afternoon the Minister was present at a parade of the police force, and in tho evening ho left for Wellington.—Press Association. Mr. A. G. Wiflin, of tho Electoral Department, is at present at Rotoraa on sick leave. Mr. R. T. Bailey, hitherto a member of the Hawko's Bav Referees' Association, and chairman of the Hawke's Bay Rugby Union, has now been transferred to the Wellington oflice of tho Labour Department. Ho intends to take up active work as a referee in local football.

Mr. Monk, advance manager for the | Allen Boone Dramatic Company, arrived in Wellington from Auckland last evening to make arrangements for t-lio local season, which commences at the Opera Houso on Saturday, March 22.

Mr. A. H. Pollock, of the Commercial Union Assurance Co., having been appointed manager of the company for Hawko's Bay, leaves for Napier at the end of (tho month, Police Commissioner Cullen arrives from Lyttolton by the Mararoa this morning. Mr. J. P. Luke has definitely decided to conte.'it the Mayoralty next month. On making his decision known, Messrs. R. A. Wright and AY. H. P. Barber decided to withdraw. This will probably mean a straight-out contest between Messrs. Luke and M'Laren.

The High Commissioner's Department | reports tlialt the following New Zealanders are to be drafted to H.M.S. New Zealand, and borne as supernumeraries for passacs to New Zealand, when they will bo discharged for service to H.M. shins on the Australasian stations:—R. J, "Greening, loading seaman, I?.M.S. Victory; M. P. Clow, leading stoker, H.M.S. Pembroke; J. W. Armstrong, leading stoker, H.M.S. Hercules; J. P. Donovan, able seaman, H.M.S. Excellent. ; Colonel A. W. Robin represented Now* Zealand at the Imperial General Staff Conference, under the presidency of General Sir John French, at Camberley, JMigland, in January. The proceedings ot tho conference were confidential. • Card, well known as a referee in local Rugby football, is leaving Wellington in order to take up farming in the Wairarapa. At the annual meeting of tho Wellington Referees' - Association last evening there were expressions of regret at Mr. Card's departure, and of good wishes for liis future welfare. Staff-Captain G. T. Glitheroe, who has been in charge of tho Salvation Army Boys' Home at Eltham since it has been opened, has received orders to transfer to Chriatchurch. He will be succeeded by Adjutant Scotney, from the Boys' Homo here.

The local office of the Vacuum Oil Company received cabled advice yesterday of the death of Mr. H. B. who was one of tho original founders o£ the Vacuum Oil Company, and who has been rpry prominent in tho American and Continental mercantile world. Mr. Everest had many correspondents in Australia and Aew Zealand, and tho news of his dentil will be received with regret by all of them.
