TUBERCULOSIS IN PIGS.
STILL VERY PREVALENT. ■ From all accounts tubercttlosis.in pigs is at least as prevalent this season as last, and as a consequence farmers are suffering in pocket, and, still worse, the disease is becoming' more and more disemina/ted through the country. The meat consuming public rightly demands inspection of pork intended for human consump-' tion, for-the public health must be the first consideration in matters such as this. _ The result is that what, is really a, serious question for the farmer is apparently no nearer a proper solution than was.the case.a'year ago. The Stock Department with its system of inspection appears to be doing its best, under difficult conditions,' to keep tho disease in hand, but it is clear to every man who properly realises the facts as they .exist at the present nioment,-that no iystem ofinspection of pigs on tho form can, in itsolf alone, bo effective .in dealing with this disease as affecting these animals. It has been pointed out time and again thai really good results can only bo expected, and can only be attained, by the adoption of sound measures of prevention. And tho statements made on this line have been substantiated by practical experiments carried out in such a way as to remove any question of doubt as "to their accuracy. In view of these facts, it is surprising that so small a proportion of dairy factories and creameries are equipped with a proper plant for pasteurising separated milk. There can be no doubt that' proper pasteurisation is tho one prooticnl remedy for the existing trouble, and until that becomes general throughout tho country tuberculosis in pigs will continue to 'be a causo of monetary, loss to the farmer.
Dairy farmers who, Micawber-like, wait For "something to turn up" without taking au active part in the "turning up" process, aro not likely to "set the Thames on fire." .. Action and foresight are accessary if you would bctter»your fortunes. Tins has been proved conclusively by farmers who cool their milk in Parton's Coolers. , Hilk cooled by tliis means is in perfect condition when it reaches the factory, whore, it receiver highest prices.
