SWIMMING CONTROL.

CARNIVAL AT LYALL BAY. COMPETITORS FOR WANGANUI, A meeting of tho Wellington Centre of the Swimming Association was held in tho Central Hotel last evening. A deputation from the Sports Committee of tho Citizens' Easter Carnival Committee, consisting of Messrs. A. Marryatt, G. S. Hill; and T. Shields waited on the centre with a request that it should organise a swimming carnival to assist to swell tho takings of tho sister carnival. Tho Saturday following Easter Monday was suggested as,a suitable date for tho meeting. ,

Members of the Centre mentioned that tho Lyall Bay Surf Club had suggested that a gala be held at Lyall Bay on similar lines to those which are organised periodically by the Australian surf clubs.

Members of the doputntion ■ suggested that a carnival at the baths and a gala at Lyall Bay might both' be organised. • After the deputation withdrew tho.centre deoided to hold a gala at Lyall Bay on March 15, under tho joint auspices of the Centre and tho Lyall Bay Surf Qlub. ■ The following water polo Warn was selected to represent' tho Centre at the Wanganui carnival, which is to bo held from February 3'.to February 10:— R. Healy, C. Fordham, H. Jehkinson, A..M.' Smith, G. H. Ncal, P; Hannah, P. Stratford. Emergencies: L. Bridge and H. C. W. Blick. S. Murrell was appointed to represent the Centre in long-distance events at tho same meeting, and C. Brico" in sprint events..... It was to award'certificates to all competitors in local mcotings ■ swimming at or under'tho standard times of the Wellington Centre. .

A 440 yds. handicap'was swum off last evening at Te Aro Baths under the auspices of the Wellington Amateur Swim-, ming Club. The result was as follows: T. Woodcock (lmiu. 305e0.),'1; W. G. Atkins, chairman of the Wellington Centre, requesting the council to alter the amateur definition- so as to exclude Northern Union players., Tho writer threatened that the Union would secede if tho requestwas not granted. It was decided to; reply that tho present definition ;had been unanimously adopted by delegates of all associations in conformity with; • the ' definition of .tho International Swimming Asfeocialion..
