Tho Primo Minister's, replies to\ deputations wore concise nnd to tho point. His ready grasp of tho matters before him was obvious to nil, but ho studiously avoided ... tlio tmic-hoiiourod Ministering , custom of molting promises', or half-pro-mises to all who, asked. He looked at matters not from tho parochial but from tho imtionnl standpoint. As ; a case in poijit, the nianngcr of tho Frimley Can-' nine; Factory pointed out that his'factory whs likely to ltavo to close down owing to the difficulty of obtaining boy and girl labour. Tho Prime' Minister's reply was that tho present Government was doing more in a year in tlio way of immigration ; than his predecessors had dono in 6«vernl years,' and ho indicated clearly that ho looked .upon 'increased, population as , a .vital necessity for tho Dominion,' ■ net merely in order to provide labour for our manufacturing industries,", but also from tho point of view of national defence. Mr. Massey emphasised that in this matter ho was not legislating so much for .the, present as for the future.
