Tho Awaroa will make tri-week'y trips between the -portß mentioned, her next sailing dato being Friday, January 17. WHERE IS THE ROBERT R. HIND? Although the Koko Head has arrived at Wellington, after a good passage of fortyfive days; there is no tidings vet of tho American schooner Robert R. Hind,.which left Paget Sound a ' month provious for Lyttelton. She is now 81 days out , Of lato several vessels from the Sound have modo rather protracted voyages; and little notice was taken of the "Robert's" long pass-age, but in view of tho arrival of the Koko Head those interested in shipping circles are wondering if any mishap has befallen', the sohooncr. The sailer had 750,000 fcot of Oregon pine on board, for Lyttelton. The Robert R. Hind is owned by the wellknown San Francisco Arm" of Hind, Ralph, and Co.. and is of 564 tons register. She was built in- 1899. - ■■■■~. FIRST WHEAT VESSELS. • ■ ft : It is rather a remarkablo fact that Sydney should havo the distinction of dispatching this eoason the first steamer and the first sailing vessel from the Commonwealth for. the United Kingdom or Oon.tlnent with full cargoes of wheat. The general order of things is for South Australia to send away the-first vessel, which is usually a sailor, with tho first of tho wheat crop, ■ and thon Victoria follows suit, with New South Wales third, and West Australia last. This season the- position has been very much reversed, and It lookß as if Western Australia will bo tho record colony to send away the next shipment of wheat for tho United Kingdom or Continent, with South Australia- third and Victoria lost. In connection with this first cargo from Sydney of 71,770 bags it is rather significant that it should be the biggest first cargo of the season ever dispatched from tho Commonwealth, and tho vessel British-owned. TRAINING SHIPS. JAPANESE VESSELS COMING. . .Although tho prominent and famous N.D.L. training-ship Herzogiu Cecille and' llorzogin Sophie Charlotte are not expected- in Australian waters this ycar-that is, .as far as is known al present—uultc a. large licet of such school ships will be seen in the Commonwealth all the s<vnie. Two— the four-masted barque Port Jackson, which runs under tho Devitt and Moore's scheme, and the ship.Mersey, sailing under tho White Star ensign-are as o. mo/tcr of fuct at present nt Sydney, and njiolhcr, tho Belgian school ship, tho L'Avenir, Is iiok nt Melbourne! whilst a fourth, tho iMedwAy, whloh rum in conjunction with J,

tho Port Jackson, BhouW' shortly turn up at Adelaide from New fork. Those are all the vessels sailing tho soaa at the present moment In the merchant service interests that will affect us in this connection, but two moro, tlilTercnl only in respect to the future of the trainees, bein? school ships for the navy c? Japan, are also looked for at Fromantlo this week. The*e vessels are tho Japanese ships Soya and Tsuga:u, formerly the Russian naval vessels Variag and Pallada, sunk during the Russo-Japanese hostilities, and'subsequently .raised and fitted out for the work they are now employed in. From what can be. learned at present, the Soya and Tsugaru will remain at Freirantle about a week, but whore they will proceed subsequently has not yet been divulged PORT OF WANGANUI. YEAR'S WORKING. Wanganui as a port is steadily growing in importance, and tho scheme of works initiated by the Harbour Board,, together With the resultant success, will unquestionably have a marked effect upon tho shipping, of the future. Already a steady improvement in the size and number of tradars invading our waters has been very apparent for some time past, particularly during the past 12 months (says a Wanganui oxohnnge). The returns of tho port for the y,ear ending December 31, 1912, with a comparative statement for 1911, are as follow (tho 1911 figures being in parenr ■ theses):— ' ■' ' , Vessels entered, foreign'; 11 (15), 2605 tons (3850). Decrease 4, representing '245 ton 6. Vessels cleaned, foreign: 14 (11), 3461 tons (3008). Increase 3, representing 453. Vessels entered, coast (H.T.): -631 (546). Increase 85, representing 23,400. , Vessels cleared, coast: 631 (545). Increase 86; representing 96,168. . , Vessels enteral (Home boats): 14 (17). Decreaso 3. representing 19,213. . 'As stated in Tub Dominion recently, for some timo past the Union Steam Ship Company has been running a regular beat between Newcastle and Now Plymouth and Wangamul. The service has been maintained livjtho Karamu, a vessel of 934 tons. It ;has now been found- that the Karamu is not largo enough to meet the requirements, so she will be replaced by, tho Kitlawa (1247 tons). The Kittawa is 'at present discharging " timber at Melbourne and Sydney, and on completion of this will go to. Newcastle to load .for the ports mentioned. " ■ ,' Tho Kittawa's arrival at Wanganui will create a new record,.as she will ho tho largest steamer to arrivo here. Tho record is at present held by the Ing;a, a vessel of 947 tons. The Marino Department were advised yesterday that, the Government steamer Hinemoa has returned to the Bluff from The Snares Island. The vessel is expected to leave tho ; southern port'thiis evoning for Wellington, via West/Coast Sounds.. Mr. F. G. Bilton, chief officer of tho Maheno, left the vessel-■ at Auckland on Monday, for orders'. Mr. F' W. Jackson has joined the vessel as chief officer, and Mr. M'Clellan, has taken the place of Mr. 8 R.
