Intimation.was received from the Public Works Department' 'stating that Mr. ■yV.":S.' Shortt had been appointed commissioner' to;inquiro into the, apportionment of the cost of the Waikanae-Rei- ; korangi Eoad. Councillors Hewcll, Galloway, and. ox-Coun6illor Lynch, with Mr.: Brandon (solicitor) were appointed to net on the. council's behalf..
Wednesday was fixed as the statutory half-holiday. '•'• - ' .:.■ .
Application was made by, Mr. E. Eiddiford, of Orougb-Ororigo,- for -•permission' to continue the road upto his property! He. also asked whether tho council trould. grant a suni to properly'metal' the fond: Councillor Wakeham, ! who represents tho riding in which Mr. .Riddiford resides,stated that it was proposed to grant £150 for. the continuation of .the 'road, buthodoubted whether the sum would bo sufficient'to execute' the work, properly. At present the *ro'ad was of little use.' Councillor Welch moved that the;matter' be .leftin the hands of Councillors Wake-: ham and ; tho overseer to.spend the. £150 ;in tho best .way possible. ,It was.decided to place'a gato across the road On. the boundary of Mr. Riddiford's property. . Regarding the sanitary condition of Plim'raerton, the chairman, stated that although tho cost of installing an up-to-date sanitary, system would not be considered, it would be advisable, to hold ;the matter over until next year. •" ,
' The Land and Survey Department informed the council that the Government had'decided not" to purchase land in Akatarawa for scenic, purposes. Tho chairman mdved'that the following motion passed at. a, previous .meeting, be rescinded:—"That the clerk should notify Charles Slight, of Paekakariki, . and' Mrs.-A. L.-.Greig,'of,,Foxton,'to remove fences off; roads fronting their, sections !in Paekakariki township within 30 days of tlio notice." After somo discussion tho .chairman .withdrew his motion.'and the clerk was instructed to inform Mr..Slight and' Mrs. Greig of tho council's intentions. If they-did not act the council would enforce its previous resolution.
The council's overseer (Mr. Y. .Cudby) reported that {he widening, of Lowry Bay R-oad at the eastern end from Lower Hu'tt' boundary was now in hand. The work was being pushed on during the'fine weather. _He recommended that- the eastern 6pan' of the Silyerstream bridge, near the i railway bridge, bellied-up, and the timber taken out. Slips' had occurred on the Akatarawo,' Road, biit could bo dealt' with at a cost of .£5.- Continuing, tho overseer, called' attention to certain,encroachments of tho-.Hutt River,- near Maori Bank, vr.hich were beepming'serious. 'There was danger of tho river getting into an o(d hollow. He recommended that it -would be advisable, to, interview the owners of property in the vicinity with a view to assisting ,thc council to. stop further trouble. The report concluded by, stating that, all the roads in the county won 1 ) in a good state of repair.-.' . The report ■ was adopted, and recommendations given effect to. ' '
