OPENED FOB TRAFFIC YESTERDAY.

The station at Doubtless Bay has been abandoned, as the new cable Tuns direct, into the Auckland Post Office, where the company"'-has special 'offices. On Tuesday, the Hou.. li. Hcaton Rhodes, Postmaster-General was advised by the teldgraph .engineer ■at' Auckland that the Pacific cable work was 'now going direct from that office, and that, the company s staff would return from Doubtless Bay on New Year's Day. Everything, he said, Lwas working satisfactorily, under 1 the tube system.', for relaying traffic ,to the old M'c'es. , ... / ' In connection with (he opening, Mr. Rhodes telegraphed. Mr. Milward, manager for the Pacifio; Cable Board at Auckland, as follows;—"Pleasenocept toy congratulations on the successful opening .of your new cable; "which will still further draw "the bonds of uniting the ebuthern Dominions of the Empire, and help to bring them into closer association on points of material interests." . . . _ 1 The reply received ffl)m. Mr. Milward was as follows: —"Much gratified at the receipt of your'message, and pleased to be able to report that the new cables have done'excellent work to-day. I Am confident that whem tho Staff is familiar with tho' new "conditions the transit times be-tween-Australia and New Zealand will ho'reduced to an' absolute minimum. Please''accept 'my best thanks for 'your promise to be present at the luncheon in Auckland on January U to celebrate the occasion."
