WANGANUI JOTTINGS.
(By Telegraph.—Special Oorrespdnflent.) Wanganui, December 26. The many friends of Master Haydn Beck, the boy violinist, will be pleased to learn that he has been accepted at the Brussels Conservatorium, a cablegram to that effect, having been. received by Mr. Louis Cohen to-day. The Christmas Eve takings on the tramways totalled ,£9, as against ,£6B last year. • ■ ' - At the inquest on Mrs. Raynor, who died suddenly on Tuesday, a verdict was returned that death was due to a. sudden heart failure while under an anaesthetic.
A largo number of riflemen have arrived in town in view, of the North Island championship meeting, which opens on the Putiki range to-morrow morning. The .ideal, weather conditions which prevailed ■'• to-day. were taken full advantage of by holiday-makers. Large numbers went up the river in motor launches and boats of all descriptions, for picnics, while the trams and trains to Castlecliff were crowded, and-there must have been a couple of thousand on the sea beach to-day. The Christmas and New Year railway excursion- fares are being taken full advantage of. The bookings at the local office have been nearly one hundred per cent, better than last year. The large increase in the number of the travelling public is partly due, no doubt, to the splendid weather, as compared to the unfavourable conditions experienced before Christmas last year.
A large two-story private hospital in brick is to be erected in Campbell Street for Sistor Brooks. Messrs. Jepson arid Gould ore the ' tenderers,' the price being ,£2553. Accommodation will be provided for 18 patients.
"The crowds in Wanganui are the most orderly of any. place in New Zealand," said a prominent police official yesterday. He added that it was really wonderful how quiet and well-behaved the crowds in the streets on Christmas Eve' were. There was a record number in the streets, but there was an .entire absence of rowdyism of any description, and only one person charged with drunkenness, who appeared at the Court this morning, and he was a first offender.
