XMAS TUG AND CARNIVAL.
A recent copy of tho English "Sporting Times" said:—"There-has been a great rovival lately of the ancient and honourable old English athletic sport of tng-of-war, always a favnwrit* ra.«t.jrn'" in tli» British Navy, but.only revived once in a "while r.shore. For-the purest trial-on concentrated strength there can hardly be a fairer test than a-properly organised tug-of-war, but the promoters of 6Uch sport must always be careful to guard against the possibility of. a side obtaining any advantage whatever in regard to batteusorin the word'to'go.'" The big tug carnival, which is. being promoted by Hay wards Enterorifes, Jitd., coinmencing in tho Town Hall to-night (Boxing night), is going to be run under tho very best auspices. Tor that purpose the pervices of the veteran sport, Mr. James Doyle, have' been secured ns referee, tind Mr. "I'Dorrie" Leslie (ex-champion walker b£ Australasia) as Btago director. Between every tug moving pictures will bo exhibited. The .calculation admission tickets aro obtainable all over the city.
