The Board of Trade, in its report, attributed the Ditton accident to the driver's insufficient knowledge of that section of the line, and misreading the signals. The engine, ad3s , the report, was insufficiently manned, and the fire which broke out was caused by the use of gas. The report recommends companies to use electricity. Qn September 17 last the engine of the Cheshire-Liverpool express failed to take the points in a steep incline near Ditton, in Lancashire, and dashed into a masonry bridge that spanned the line. The carriages dashed into the - station, collided 1 with the platform, and were reduced to matchwood. The ignition of the gas in the carriages set fire, to the.wreckage, and , appalling scenes ensued, thirteen of the passengers being litorallv roasted alive. There were fifteen fatnlities, while 10 were more or less injured. The driver was killed. ' . .
