EXPORT TAX ON HIDES.
MINISTER GIVES NO ENCOURAGE-
A deputation, consisting of Messrs. WaruocK and J agger, representing the lanniug interests of Auckland, intemewed the Minister for Customs (the lion. F. M. B. Fisher) tfl-day, to urge upon the Minister to introduce an export tax on New Zealand hides. It was pointed out that tlio cost of hides had risen in a few years from 2d. .or 3d. per pound .to 10d. and IOJd., due to the world-wide ifcinqnd lor Now Zealand hides, our hides being free from many of tho defects noticeable in hides from South Africa, Queensland, aud other places. The local demand had remained unsatisfied as a result of the big.drain, and the industry was theretore seriously affected.
The Minister said there' was not tho slightest hope of the present Government acceding tp such a request. By doing so they would be opening the way tor similar requests in connection with other natural products like butter, meat, wool, etc; That would never do, nnd it was as well that the position shoiild.be eclarly understood.
