THE LATE MRS. NEWMAN.

-.i—_—«—-—- -,'■''.•■ PROPOSED MEMORIAL. 'A great many people will bo gratified to learn that steps are to be taken, to make some recognition of the many public services rendered by the lato Mrs. Newman.' The;. Women's Branch of the Political Reform League, of which' Mrs. Newman was president at the time of her death, has instituted a movement, which-.is explained' by tho following circular just issued:— ' .; x Wellington, December 0, 1912. "At a special meeting of the Wellington Branch <f the Women's Political Reform League, it'was unanimously agreed that some" public recognition should be made of;-.the many :services reudered to the community by the late Mrs: Newman. No one who knew her could fail to admire her high sense of the obligations: resting on all citizens to ■■ assist, so far as lay within their-power, in any movement for tho common good or for raising the standard of our national :life. Socially, privately, and publicly.in spite of ill-health, she was ever ready to render help where' it was inost heeded, and to her' splendid public spirit, inspiring zeal,.and courage-ous-indifference to difficulties the, Cit- of. Wcllingtoiv. and indeed the whole Dominion, owes much.

Amongst tho'many good .works in which Mrs. Newhian played a prominent part'was the founding of the, Convalescent Home at Wellington; which sho helped to..establish, and was chairwoman of - its govorhing body; up to tho time of. her death. It has been suggested that a solarium, or sun room, should be added to the Convalescent Home, and called the Octavia Newman Sun Room. The idea would, it is felt-certain, have appealed to-her strongly, ■ for she was always desirous of rendering practical help to and lightening-the lot of the suffering. . "The proposal is to raise a sum of .£SOO by subscriptions from those who are familiar with the record of achievement which Mrs; -Newman has left and who appreciate and admire" the noble; example she, has-set as a. public-spirited -woman deeply, concerned for the well-being of thoseyamongst. whom shelived; .A- com-, jnittee has. been formed- to. help on the .project, and its members take this. opportunity of: bringing tho matter under your.'notice,.believing,that it will meet with, your .sympathy and .support. It is asked that those' 'who--desire to assist willforward:: their "contributions as-:early; as possible, as the -subscription list'will be closed on Marchv3o,-.1913,'.-V. -, ;'. "Contributions may bo sent-'to." Miss. Fitzherbert,'. Treasurer .of Fund, -27 Golder's Hill, up to February- 14,- and after ;that date to Mrs. E. Hwtfield, Hill Street,-Wellington. .-•.:;■•■;> '.--.•■ ■-.
