A BALKY HORSE.

HOW HE WAS BROUGHT TO REASON.' There are many, ways ;of treating a balky horse, but a novel and effective way is described, in an exchange as having been discovered accidentally. Tho story', rims as follows:—''A certain farmer purchased a horse which was represented to-. l>e a good harness horse. Tho new owner had business in town, and accordingly harnessed his new purchase to the carriage and set out. The horse, however, decided that it did not want to go to town. ;Tho owner plied the whip, but if possible the horse grew more obstinate. The driver alighted from the carriage and led or rather pulled the animal till ho had gone about half ninile from home,' Then he found that he had forgotten some documents that, he must have, so there was nothing to'do but' to go back after theni. He then led the horse out of the road, securely tied him to a bush, and 'cut' across the fields to the house. '' ... "When ho returned to the horse lie found him very restless, stamping, and .showing impatience. When the animal', had been, untied he started off, hardly giving tho master time to get into the carriage. He walked off at a pretty brisk pace, never showing any further desire to haik. "On the return trip, when about half a mile out of town, he to balk again. The whip was brought into play, but to no purpose. Then an idea occurred .to the owner. He again led the horse out of\the road arid tied him up. He then walked away about fifteen yards and sat behind a clump of bushes where he could see tho horse. The obstinate animal was soon seized by a fit of restlessness. • After standing there half an hour he was given another trial, with tho same result as before. Since then he, like a wise horse, chooses the lesser of two evils."
