HOTEL WORKERS' UNION.
HALF-YEARLY MEETING. • The half-yearly meeting -of the Wellington District Hotel, Club, and Restaurant Workers' Union was held last evening.in' the Trades" Hall. ! ' The report''submitted by the secretary (Mr. E. J. Carey) stated that during the term under review 373 new members,- consisting of 242 male and 131 female workers, had been, admitted to the union. The contributions received totalled ,£345, but the expenditure had been exceptionally heavy, chiefly on account of the 'Federation Conference held at Dunedin, and legal expenses incurred in maintaining the award of the union. The total expenditure for the half-year amounted to ,£428, and tho period closed. with a credit balance of' .£2OO. All the retiring officers were reelected, and • Mt. H. O'Malley was appointed assistant secretary out of 60 applicants for the position. He will take up his duties next week. Mr. E. J. Carey, who has been the secretary since the inception of tho union, was re-elected. Messrs. T. I/ong (of Auckland), A. O'Malley and C. Marshall, were appointed assessors to the Conciliation Council _to settle tho 1 dispute in connection with the fresh award proposed to supersede the existing one. A special resolution referring the dispute to the Conciliation Council was passed. A ballot in confirmation thereof is to close on December IG, and the claims will be filed tho following day. The claims to be made were formally adopted. There are (reports Mr. Carey) only a- few departures from the terms of the existing award. A small increase is beinsr asked for in the wages of the lower-paid workers, and a full preference clause is desired. The meeting passed a resolution thanking the local and country presidents of the unions for the work they had done during; the past six months, and it was decided to vote a sum of money for the purchase of medals to mark that appreciation. A meeting of the bar assistants' section of the union is to be held ■to elect, a committeeman to represent the section on tho general committee of the union.
