HEALTH INSPECTOR KILLED.
ON R.M.S. lONIC. A fatal accident occurred on board the steamer'lonic yesterday. The victim was John Thomas Hopkins, an inspector of tho Public Health Department. When the lonic arrived in Wellington last 'Safe, urday there was a case of measles aboard, and Mr. Hopkins and a confrere (Mr. Reed) went to the vessel yesterday to fumigate it. Mr. Hopkins was descending' a ladder in one of the holds, when he missed his footing, and was precipitated into a lower hold. It was a fall of 20 feet. Deceased fell on his head, and fractured the baso of the skull. He was taken to the hospital, ivhere ho died early in the afternoon. . . Mr. Hopkins was married, and he Uvea in Hernia. Street, Berhampore. An inquest will be opewxl at 10 o'clock this morning.
