'■ . . - Woodville, December 5. - The weather, at Woodville to-day was in ' 'marked contrast to that of yesterday.'Not. a breath of wind prevailed, and the heat was intense. The racing was full of surprises, some of the winners 1 giving much ' bettor displays than 011 the first. day. | There was a good attendance, and,, as has been the case at many meetings lately, 1 the totelisatoT returns showed a big.in- '■ crease.-; "w-i wb-t .aroli Despite a big field of sixteen runners : in tho first event the public correctly sized up the situation, and succeeded in 1 picking tha 'first and second horses. War Queen was .the first to become prominent > after .1 splendid start, and she led to tlio l straight where Lucerne joined .'her in the run home, and beat her comfortably. Merton finished very fast, but could not i reach War Queen. Royal Simon, who was mixed up in the field at the jump off, 1 finished on well, and got fourth place just ahead of Daybreak. The winner is a half- : sister to Makara and St. Toney, and .can evidently gallop as fast as the other . members of this family. Tho first day's winner, Bravest, was the ; best backed in the hurdles. Eiya made the running for a mile, when Aema ran up to him, and Bravest passed the Maliaki gelding.' This pair were first into tho straight from a strung-out field, but,' at ' the last fence, Sunrose appeared on ths outside. In a good finish Aema just struggled home with the top weight third. Waiaio, Eiya, B?rcola. and Whimper followed in that order. Tho last-named, who was commissioned away from the course, got a very bad bumip.after going five fur--1 longs, anil this spoilt any cbance that' 119 had. There , were seventeen runners in the . Ruahina Hack Handicap. St. Serf (Hatch), Eastwind (Deeley), and Papain araina (Oliver) were the best backed. The first-named, on the rails, began smartly, but was ridden for a furlong to keep his position, and, when they settled down, St. Serf led Fleetweek, Hautu, and Abercoed, while Black Lupin- and East- ! wind could be seen getting into trouble. Hautu was dons with at the bottom of the straight. There Eastwind was just behind Abercoed and St. Serf. Inside the distance Q.uesn of Scots shot out, and; in a good finish, won by two lengths. Papa- ' luaratna was just clear of Abercoed, with &istwind and Hautu next. First day's form worked out well in tho big race, in which Sir Solo won from > Master Laddo., Tho winner was favourite, witb the chestnut horse well up. At tho start the favourite jumped out 'first, but British Maid headed him at the stand, and led down tho back with Ariom and Sir Tristram just _ behind Sir Solo. The last-named went in front to the three furlongs, but, shortly aftor, Ldch Mabin took command, and led into the straight from the favourite. The whole field now bunched but Birkline and Ngatimaru camo fast. They were, however, carried out, and Master Lnddo slipped up on the fence. He speedily _ caught and- passed all but Sir Solo, who had a good length's advantage as they past the post. Ariom was close up, and then came Loch Mabin and Mangaroa. Master Laddo did not go kindly in tho first part of the race, but in the straight he got up on the rails, and made up a lot of ground. The winner got a better run to-day than he did yesterday, and lie also seemed to go kinder. , San Wai was .very sore when he went out to contest the Stewards' Handicap, but, despite this, he was made a pronounced favourite, while Manakau also came in for heavy support. Tho favourite jumped out well, but he was too sore to go with the field, and soon got into trouble. Eocene led to the bond, where Manakau and Glenfern were whipping tho field. Eocene was done with at the turn, and Boronia led into the straight. Manakmi then came fast on the outside, and, smothering everything, ran homo an easy winner. Manitau was just clear of Aviatrix and Eocene. St: Toney was made a better favourite than Lord Possible in the Railway Handicap. There was some delay at tho barrier, and-when it lifted Lord Possible shot out, while St. Toney was slow to find his feet, and Longstep soon headed him, and ran up.to Lord Possible. He had a half length's advantage as they ran into the straight, which, he.increased in the run home. Red Lupin caino very fast at the finish, and momentarily looked liko getting second, but Longstep was ablo to stall him off. Tho favourite was -fourth, and on pulling up was found, to be very lame. After numerous scratchings, ten runners were left in tho Scun-y. Sylvia May, who was ridden by A.. Oliver, and had drawn a .position on tho rails, was made favourite, and sho .duly materialised, with her stable companion, Sleigh Bell, in second place. At the start, the favourite jumped out of the barrier in a manner reminiscent of Naumai.in his best days. Without being extended, she ran away from the field and won very easily. Sloigli Bell was in second place the whole way. Ceylon and Muleteer monopolised tho at- ! tention of backers in the concluding event, and the former won.nicely from Ascalon, with Jlysteriach next. Ascalon had a good 1 ead entering .the straight, but Cevlon (in- • LialwdVeK. tot and, loiisrtMjJ. j
