SCHOOL PATRIOTISM.

SALUTING THE FLAG. ' ■. The fifteen-year-old boy Leofric Temple was suspended recently from the CedarGrove. High .School, New Jersey,.charged with having committed an act of "open deiiance." He refused to take the oath of allegiance, as required by the rules of the school, and was sent home by the principal. An appeal for the revocation, of tho principal s orders will bo made by Leoi'ric's father, Frederick Temple, formerly an officer in the British Army, who still remains a British subject. : At a mooting of the Education Board the'majority of the members approved tho rule made by Principal Hutchison requiring all pupils to salute tho flag and daily to repeat this pledge: "I pledge allegiance to my flag and the nation for which it stands: one nation, indivisable, with liberty and justice." "The pledge is only an acknowledgment ot' constituted authority," said tho superintendent of schools with jurisdiction over Uedar-'jrove. "It does not state thnt the pledge is made to any particular flag. Anyone might take the pledge and still remain true to another country." Unless tho boy is permitted to resume his'studies tho boy's father will appeal to the. British Ambassador at Washington to take up tho case. He holds that tho boy refused to conform with the rule oC the school simply because lie is honest, and would not demean himself by swearing allegiance to one country with mental reservations in favour of anothor.
