Blenheim, November 20. The Spring meeting of tho Marlborough Racing Club wns held to-day in fine weather. The going was very hard, and clouds of dust followed in the wake of tho horses. Generally speaking, the fields were small, but the racing provided some good finishes. The trotting event was hardly a satisfactory race, and several of the contestants seemed to be anything but anxious to reach tho front. Sinapis put up a sterling performance by winning the Blenheim Handicap under 9st. 91b. Though the attendance was not large, speculation was good, and Mr. H. D. James, who ran the totalisator for the first time, put through a good sum of money. > Merry Guy, with Deeley in the saddle, was u good favourite in the Maiden Race, but Ruination, Borsil, and Panthea also carried a lot of money. , At the start tho two first-named jumped out clear of Panthea, but tho' lnttor was very sore, and could riot go', with, the field. The favourite, on the fcn'ce7~was first into the straight, but Ruination was keeping him at. it.. Borsil ,came very fast in the last furlong, and in a good finish was only beaten by a head. Panthea just got up 'in time to defeat' Ruination, for third' place. Alofa was the next to finish. Molly Wood, on the limit, and ridden' by D. Nyhan, was made favourite in the First Trot. Todd Bells, a locally-owned horse, also came in for a lot of support. I The favourite began smartly, and was soon ■ clear of tho field. At the sevenfurlongs'post Todd Bell pnssed him, and ' a little later gained a big lead, but in the "straight Molly Wood tackled 'him again. Todd Bells then broke and galloped past tho post. The rider of Molly Wood lodged an. objection, which was upheld. Imperial Bell Boy was- placed second. Parky, who had broken down, nnd Amberstono, were withdrawn from tho Hack Welter, leaving three horses to go to the post. Deeley, on Daunton, made ■ the pace very slow, tho first three furlongs taking -12 seconds. Then Astonishment tried for u break, but Si. Boea vent with her, and' the three horses entered the straight together; After a keen struggle between the trio they crossed the lino locked together. The finish was th« finest of the day, and no ono but tho jud?o could say which horse had won. Sinapis was tho best supported of tub Blenheim Handicap field; From a perfect start, for which Mr. O'Connor was applauded, Beacon-and St. Felix took up the running, with the field strung out. At the mile, Wild Bird joined the leaders. At the four furlongs. St. Felix fell back beaten, and Sinapis moved up from the rear. The latter entered the straight alongside of Beacon, and from this out had matters all her own way, winning with ease by two lengths. Wild Bird was a poor third and St. Felix last. The winner ran a milo in lmin. 42sec. two mornings before the race. This was a record gallop for the season, and was five seconds faster than the best of that morning. The Achilles mare, Portland Lady, was supposed to be a certainty for the Hack .Race, and after allowing Ladino to make the running for three furlongs, she went to tho'front, and though she hung out a . lot in making the straight entrance, she , came on, and won easily. Indra was a ' long way back in-the early part of the . race, but she finished well, and. beat , Daunton for second place. Bracken's win in the Flying Handicap wns most, popular, and the horse was, re- " ceived with cheers as he came back to the , bu'd-cagfc Longstep was made favourite, but she got away badl)-, and was then taken to the. front too quickly. Sho ■ led into the straight from Merchantman and St. Bees, but when heads were turned for home, Bracken slipped up on the I fence, nnd won nicely. St: Bees was . close up third. • The Porirua-awncd Aratiatia'saw o very short price in the. Electric Handicap, but he drew an outside position at the barrier, ! and failed to jump out cleanly. Kina, ! on tho.'Tsils, began smartly, and wa? in behind Merry Guy till the straight was ! reached, when he came out, and won cleverly by a length. Ru.ipara was third; ( and the' favourite fourth, Jj
