' The inter-State lawn tennis, tournament was largely attended to-day, tie weather being: cool and cloudy and the courts in good order. The principal attraction was the play of the Englishmen, 'who were cordially greeted. - '~,...!' Doubles Championship. Dixon and Lowe,.in the doubles championship, beat St. John and BMr-6-2, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Dixon played a beautiful scientific game, his volleying ; being severe. His. pretty back-hand stroke right across the court evoked frequent applause.' Ho was ably supported by Lowe, who served well, , . . ; ■ Jones and Wright beat, .Marsh and Ollivier, -6-3,..3-6,".'t-6, 6-3.'-. If was a magnificent game. Ollivier, immedi.at'ely. after beating Thomas in a game lasting over two hours, began the doubles. Ollivier's overhead work and volleying were attractive. •' Brookes and Dunlop beat Anderson and Thomas, 6—l, 6-5, 7-5. ■ > ; Singles Championship. In the-Singles Championship; Wright beat Wobd, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-fl/ Ollivier beat Thomas (Adelaide), 3—6, 6-1, 4—6, 6—o, 7-r5: Beamish beat Baird, 3—6, 6—l, '6—3, 6—l. The Englishman was never extended;- He impressed the spectators with his beautiful ground strokes, and his back-handing was particularly graceful and effective;. He has a. fine straight, fast service, his shots being executed in orthodox fashion. Dixon beat Wertkeim, 6—3, 7—5, 6-4. Dixon was very, safe. Lowe beat Down, 6—2, 6—3, 6—l. The Englishman has beautiful safe ground shots, and a lot of pace and length.
