SUMMER FLOWERS.

HUTT ROSE SHOW. The annual Rose Shovv of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society was held in the Town Hall, Lower Hutt, yesterday, and visitors wcro most agreeably surprised by the quality of the exhibits. There was no formal opening ceremony upon this occasion. Ono of the outstanding entries was„a collection of twenty roses from Mr. For6ter Pratt, of ralmerston North, and another very fino ono was that of Mr. Alfred Booth. Both competitors secured prizes, the former being awarded Mrs. Riddiiord's silver rose bowl and the National Rose Socioty's silver medal. Mr; Booth secured tho prize for the champion bloom of the show, with a beautiful specimen of "Dean Hole," A magnificent collection of. gloxinias was sent in for exhibition by Mr. G. A. Chapman, who has gained an onriable reputation for these flowers. Tho richness and variety of-colouring was indescribablo, and one could well believe tho statement that his exhibit would hold pride of place with any in Australasia. For this Mr. Chapman was awardod the Royal Horticultural, Society's silver medal. . A tall vase of carnations, sent in by Mr. C. H. Izard, evoked admiration, 'and the decorated tables, twelve in number, attracted a considerable amount of'at-| tention. They were, on the wholo arranged with mora nnconventionality and more taste than one has been accustomed to see in this class of competition. A fine display of flowering pot plants and foliage by Mr. T. Waugli, included gloxinias, streptocarpus, clerodendron, basket ferns and many ather handsome plants. A striking display was made by Messrs. F. Cooper, Ltd., chief among which were some beautiful pelargoniums, and roses.. Messrs. Cooper wore awarded, for their exhibit, the Royal Horticultural Society's bronze medal. Mr. Horton was also represented by an excellent , display of flowering plants and exhibits of cut roses. Tho arrangements of the' stands 6f flowers and decorative effects of the show had been carried out with much care and taste. Mr. T. Waugh judged the exhibits. The following is the prize list:-— Open Class: Six hybridjierpetnals (distinct)—C. Trevothick, 1; F. Wcstbury; 2. Six hybrid leu roses (distinct)—C. Trevethick, 1; F. J. Nathan, 2. Six tea roses (distinct)-C. Trevethick/ 1; F. Westbury, 2. Twelve hybrid tea roses (distinct)— Mrs. A. E. Pearce, 1; F. Westbury, 2. Six vases, eaclrcontaining three roses of one varioty, stems not more than 9 inches in longth-F. 1; F. Westbury, 2. Collection of roses (distinct), not exceeding- twenty varieties—First prize, Mrs.' Riddiford's silver rose bowl, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, and the National. Rose Society's silver medal—J. R. Forster Pratt; second prize, trophy value 215., A. Booth; third and special, C. Trevethick. Twelve irises, not less than four ,varieties—Mrs. H. B. Gordon. Hobbs, 1; Miss W. Hobbs, 2. Bowl of Toses—Miss Trevethick, 1; Mrs. A. J. Hobbs, 2. Miss Prebble judged tho entries in the decorative class. Mr. R. Wood's orchestra played selections during the afternoon.
