A ca9o of special interest to shipping was decided by Mr. Widdowson, S.M., this morning, when ho guvo resoryed decision in tlio caso of George M. Buxton, master of the bhip Kaiapoi, who was charged that, when leaving Lyttelton fop the purpose of proceeding to sea, he /failed to record tho ship's draught of water and extent of free-board in tho official logbook, and did, without reasonable cause, fail to produce sush record to tho Superiiitehdont of Marine when requited to do so. Tho magistrate held that though Section 20fl of tho Act was not aptly arranged, it was made clear by tho light of the previous section. Ho held that. sub-Section » of Section 206 held a mandate to tho master to record certain particulars in tho official log-book. That being so, tho master had been guilty of a purely technical offence. Tho enso would serve as a warning to 6hip-niasters. Captain Buxton was convicted and ordered to pay costs. NAPIER, HARBOUR.
