CONFERENCE OR NOT?
BY CHAMBERS OP COMMERCE. In response to a letter forwarded by the 'secretary o( tho 'Wellington Chamber of Cofnmerce to the. Auckland chamber, as to whether it favoured the. formation of an association of .chambers of commerce, the secretary "of the' Auckland chamber replied:— . ■ •. "I beg to adviso that your letter of 20th ult. was submitted to my council at its meeting yesterday, and tho ' following resolution was-passed— "That ". ■tho advantages •to be ,;gained ■ frOiii ■ membership "in the proposed associ'a- " tion are not: commensurate with the financial liability'imposed by tho pro- " ! posed rules, and that,■ under the cir r 'j ciimstancos, the council ,is of opinion" that for:consultative purposes,- con- . ferences, as' held in preferable.'"' On tho' letter being read at yesterday's meeting of the council of''.the Wellington .Chamber 'of-Commerce, Siri C, W. Jones asked if the other chambers of comhiorce had. turned the proposal down. The chairman (Mr. A. E. Mabin) replied that favourable replies had been received from • Christchurcli, Diinedin, and jfa-. pier. ■ The matter, he explained, had first been raised in May, 1909, when Mr. Hark-' Ness Was chairirian of the chamber, when draft rules had. been prepared, and it had been brought up again in April of this year, since when Chrlstchurch, Dunedinj and' Napier had replied, agreeing to the. proposal, but they' had had some' difficulty in getting an. answer frOm Auckland . until he went up last month. The financial liability of that chamber .(having 400 member's) Would amount to <£10 a. .year. They' considered that more'.good could be done by bombarding the Government With resolutions by the different chambers. The original resolution respecting the formation of the, proposed association was . that it should be formed if fifteen chambers joined, and paid their anrtuttl subsoription. ■ , Mr. Leigh HuAt proposed that a conference of the associations should be held in March next,. It seemed to. him that. Auckland was not opposed to tho principle of an association; '• Tho chairman: '"Yes, toy ore opposed to the principle. : They've gone cold on the proposal." Mr, Hunt said' that he still thought it advisable, to have a 'conference, if it was only, to discuss the 'Bankruptcy Act, and he proposed' flvat the chambers of com- ■ merco of New Zealand should be circularised, stating that tho first' c<inr<>renco of ■ tho association would be held in JSlajrch next; that a pVccis of tho rules bo forwarded to each chamber, and that they be asked to signify their intention of becoming members,' and if so to forward their subscriptions. ■ This Was carried;' > ========~se~
