Q.' REPORT TO PARLIAMENT. : The petition of I\ W- Haybittle and others for' legislation ,to encourage the production of iron and steel in New Zealand was reported upon yesterday by tlie 'special committee appointed by tho House of Representatives. • The committee re* ported:— (1) That it is desirable in the interests of this Dominion to encourage the production of iron and steel from the ores of this country. (2) That the proposals of the Ethelbutga syndicate as laid down in the draft Bill now before the committee appear to be unsatisfactory and tho committee does not recommend the acceptance of those proposals in their present form. (3) That the Govomniont bo reconimendr. Ed to make full inquiry into the question tit as early a date as possible with the 1 , view of ascertaining, the terms on which investors are prepared to provide the', l-necessary capital to develop tho. industry on an adequate scale. ■ - (4) Further, as an alternative that tho Government should fully inquire, into the advisableness of developing the' industry as a State enterprise. {5) That tho Government should insist on the terms of tho ParnparA and Onokaka leases being cpmpliod with. Without discussion tho House referred, the report to tho Government for consideration. . !
