SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

An "At Home" in the Sydney Stroat Schoolroom. Very pleasant and cheery was the "at home" which was given by tho Institute of Architects in the Sydney Street Schoolroom last evening, and among tho guests present was his' Excellency' the Governor. Seldom indeed has the hall presented so handsome an appearance as it did upon this occasion, and even its most familinr friends found it difficult, to recognise, so complete was its transformation. - Carpeted throughout with crimson, its spuce broken by tall stands with palms and ferns, small (al)les and comfortable chairs, an atmosphere of'comfort was at. once imparled, while the pleasures of the eye were still further studied by tho collection of.many interesting .paintings cxe--cuted by wcll-kiiown artists, and portraits, against a background of deep brown, carried frieze-like all round the sides of the room. The effect was delightful,, and one could only r'egret that it was so seldom the building presented so interesting an appearance. Large flags, chosen with careful discrimination as to colour effects, were suspended from the ctiliug, and were draped in soiue places on the wall above the pictures, and the sta.se was carpeted in sreen, . and"; made beautiful with lyeopndium. palms, ;and great vases and bowls of scarlet rhododendrons.
