THE MERCHANTS' ASSISTANTS. STOREMEN'S AWARD. A further phase of the Merchants' Assistants' Dispute has been reached by the Court of Arbitration filing an award in tho.storeinan's section. Briefly, the award provides for a week of 4S hours (a day's work not to exceed 0 hours) for a minimum wage of £2 10s. for those performing storemen's work. Jun- ' ior storemen under the age of 22 years are to be paid the following minimum rates: Up to 17 years, 12s. 6d. per week; 17-18 years, 17s. Gd. per week; 18-19 years, 225. 6d. per week; 19-20 years, 275. Gd.. per week; 20-21 years, 325. Gtl. per week; 21-22 years, 375. 6d. per week. The proportion of juniors to storemen must not exceed one to three in a case where three or more storemen are employed. Casual workers are to be paid at the rate of Is. IJd. per hour, with overtime at the rate of Is. sd. per hour. Overtime rates Tango from 6d. ppr hour for juniors to Is. 3d. per hour for storemen over twenty-one years of age. The usual holidays are provided for and work on any of the specified days is to be paid for nt overtime rate?.' There are also provisions for meal hoiirs, notice upon termination of engagement, etc. ' Tho. preference clause provides for tho dismissal of non-unionists declining ■ to join th". union if at tho time equally qunlified unionists are available.Tho award applies only to workers substantially engaged as storemen; and in establishments conducting wholesale and retail ibusiness it.shall apply only to the workers regularly employed in the wholesale department. The term of the award is from October 28, 1012, until October 9, 1915.
