AT TIiENTHAM AND ELSEWHERE. Riflemen of _ the various city and suburban clubs have now settled down for the season's shooting, and several competitions were inaugurated on Saturday afternoon at Trentham and other ranges in the district. Amongst the ISS who travelled to Trentham by the riflemen's special were H officers and 89 uien of the Fifth Regiment (under Lieutenant-Colonel C. Ilareourt Turner), for preliminary instruction in range musketry, part of the course in class-firing. Practice in "grouping" and "application fire" was carried out at 200 yards' range. The remainder of the train's complement included 16 members of the Highlanders' Rifle Club, twenty-four gunners from' the Petone Company of the Wellington Garrison Artillery Division, nine from A Squadron of the Sixth Mounted Regiment, and thirty-sis men of the ICarori Rifle Club. The • weather was not good for shooting—far from it, frequent rain squalls obscuring the targets, and making matters most unpleasant for the men on the mounds.
