HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE FEARED. FIRE STILL SPREADING., (Rcc. October 14, 1.5 a.m.) Hobart, October 13. Strenuous rescue work was unremittingly continued throughout last might and-to-day. Hundreds of miners have flocked from surrounding districts. As one party retired exhausted many others arc ready to replace it. I Desperate and heroic efforts have been made to penetrate the deadly fumes arising from the ore, and a magnificent spirit and splendid devotion is being displayed. The scene a,t the mine is pathetic. Strong men, with tear-stained faces, are standing in groups hoping for the best. Streams of people from the surrounding township have gathered at the mine month. Divers' suits have been obtained, and will bo utilised in penetrating tho lower levels. Chemists and mine officials hold the view that the men at tho bottom levels have a chance to escape, as the tendency of tho poisonous fumes is to rise, -not to descend, tliough they admit, the chance is slender. - It is "now feared that the loss of life will bo heavy. The fire is still spreading.
