A class in field sketching for officers is being arranged by Captain Greenish for Monday, October 23 (Labour Day). Tho subjects treated will bo piano table-work and road traversing. All officers wishing to take part are requested bo meet at tho Karori tunnel at 9.30 a.m. on that date. Postal .matters at Eastbourno have late-, ly been tho subject of negotiation between tho local council and the Government. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council ou i'riday evening a letter was received from llr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., enclosing the Minister's reply, to tho effect that tho. erection of a post office in the district was under consideration, but other and more urgent works would probably have preference. Tho Mayor remarked that thero seemed to bo littlo hopa of an office being erected this year, but arrangements might possibly bo made for temporary premises. In regard to a request for a mail servioo twice a day, a reply was read, acceding to this, on tho understanding that the first mail went over by the 7.20 a.m. boat (missing thc southern steamer) and the second by the 2.30 p.m. boat. This, considered councillors, was very satisfactory, and it was resolved to thank tho authorities, and agreo to the innovation. In connection with' the post office, a deputation is to s wait upon' the. Minister.;
Tho conference of the New Zealand Baptist Union and Missionary Society will comiuenco in Christchurch to-morrow,'and quite a largo number of delegates nro passing through Wellington from tho north. This conference is expected to be tho largest ever held in the Dominion.
It has been brpuglit to tho notice of the Defence Authorities at District Headquarters, Palmerston North, that on some' ranges men have fired at tins and other marks set up on the range. Such a practice is dangerous, and must not be allowed (states a district order). The senior officer present will bo held responsible that no man fires at any mark other than tho regulation target.
In connection with the purchase agreement between the Wellington Steam Ferry Company and tiie Eastbourne Borough Council, the council, at its monthly meeting on Friday evening, agreed upon the preliminary steps in connection with the proposed loan. Tho amount of the loan ■to be raised'was finally fixed at .£15,000, .which will be secured by a rate of ifd. in tho £. A circular setting out tho proposals is to be distributed to each ratepayer, and prior to tho day of the poll public meetings are to be held at Bona Bay, and in the Town Clerk's office, Wellington. Tho dates of theso meetings aro to bo fixed by the Mayor.
