PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A.meeting'of the Petonc Borough Council was held last evening, tho Mayor (Mr. M'Ewan) presiding. ' Councillors present were: Messrs. List, Broeklebank, Cox, Trueinan, Burridge. A letter was received from the solicitors of Mrs. Lovo objecting to the council granting a permit for the erection of a soap factory, which the solicitors understand is to be erected adjoining her property. It was remarked that tno council as yet has no idea whero the factorj'"is to bo erected, but it was decided to notice the objection raised. Regarding tho investment of sinking funds'the Wellington City Council wrote intimating that at fhciv last meeting they had resolved to ask the Government to repeal Section 25 of fho Local Bodies' Loans Amendment Act, 1908, which provides that no person other than tho Public Trustee shall'be appointed as a commissioner of the' sinking funds of any loan raised under"the principal Act. The Citv Council asked for Petone's co-operation. It was decided not to make any move in the matter, the Petone Council being ouite satisfied with present conditions.
The Health Inspector (Mr. T. Hopkins) reported one case of scarlet fever and one case of tuberculosis in the borough. In both eases tho infected persons had been removed to the hospital, and their respective houses disinfected.
The Petone Rugby Football League were granted permission to use an area on the recreation ground next Saturday. The. borough engineer wrqto drawing the council's attention to the amount of wilful damage done to the council's property in many parts of the horough. The' police had been ' informed of the damage, but, so far, nothing had been done. It was decided to offer a reward of £5 for a conviction.
The engineer further stated that the total'value of building permits issued during the past month amounted to .EI6G2, and fees for the same period amounted to £6. Tho total value of those permits for the year was equivalent to. 10s., and tho fees' for the same period amounted -to £52.
Tho Police Department wrote stating that tho Petone Police Station is to bo connected with the telephone exchange. Regarding the approach to the new bridge the Hutt River Board wrote stating that they would be prepared to grant Petone an additional 22 perehes of land for road purposes provided that the council were prepared to pay an additional price pro rata for the extra land required.—Received.
A deputation waited on the council regarding the completion of Richmond Street right through to Islington Street. The council replied that they had tho matter in view.
Nothing further has been discovered towards rectifying the loss of pressure in the water supply of the borough, stated the engineer in his report. The valves on the mains leading into the Gear Co. and railway yards had been sealed, without anv. improved .pressure. A systematic search is to be made along the mains with a", view to discovering as to whether a broken or cracked pipe exists. An increased flow no doubt could be obtained by lowering the part on the pipe line which is abo,ve:the hydraulic grade. A motion by the Mayor regarding sanitary drainage, which was carried, was as follows-.—"That the engineer be directed to proceed with the work of preparing levels and plans and other preliminary work in connection with the, sewerage'scheme and that.he be empowered to engage assistance- fov the works, and that, if "necessaryconsult engineering experts." Prior to the ordinary business of the council a special motion was passed amending the Petone sewerase by-laws.
