LADIES AT GOLF.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP,

THIRD DAY'S PLAY AT NELSON

(By Tclejraph.—Press Associat'on.! Nelson, September 2. Sunshine prevailed for the third day's play in the Now Zealand ladies' golf championship tournament. The day was exceedingly pi pa'•ant for golf, although a northerly wind was a Irifie disconcerting. The championship contestants have now been iiiirruwcd down to eight, nn»l, of llie-e, Mi'-. Guy William-, .Mrs. Slack, Mis>. Collins, and -\li-> IVarce are the favourites.

Mrs. Williams has shown the test form on the \«lsuii links, but flic has, however, won coinp-irativoly easily on all her games, whereas J[r=. Slack has had a hard lijjht mi each occasion. In practice last week. Mrs Slack iliil a phenomenal round in the vicinity of So. Miss Collins has had two wins, but will find Miss Snodgrass. a tough proposition. The game between Mrs. Slack and -Miss Wood tomorrow should also, be a very clos? one. Mrs. Williams should beat Miss Burns, judging by how they finished, up to-day. It is anticipated that Miss I'earce will get the bolter of Mrs. M'Carthy, although it will probably be a close finish. Tile only match of particular interest in the third round of the championship was that between Mrs. Slack and Miss G. Gorrie. The finish proved to be one of Dio closest yet seen in the tournament, and the game, while not productive of particularly good golf, kept the onlookers on tiptoo With excitement until the last putt. Mrs. Slack deserved her win, for her very plucky uphill fight. The fact that the match was of such importance, and the corresponding tension on the players, accounted in a measure for the comparatively indifferent scores. The- first half ended 2 up in Miss Gorrie's favour, both ladies taking 50 on the outward journey. "The Gorsp" was halved in four. Then Miss Gorrie secured the next hob with a long putt for 3, placing her again 3 up with' 6to play. 'Spion 7vop' - proved an awkward knot to unravel, but Mrs. Slack secured it for 7. The strain now -appeared to begin to tell on Mrs. Slack, who fooled her drive off the thirteenth tee. to which Miss Gorrie replied with a prefect ball, followed up by another, which fell close to the green. Mrs. Slack, on the other hand, made several more unsatisfactory shots, and then picked her ball up. This was the last sign ' which Mrs.' Slack showed of feeling nervous, as she- went- straight ahead after that, winning the fourteenth and halving the- fifteenth holes, llius reducing the difference to 2 up with 3' to play. It was now Miss Gorrie's turn to show signs of"crackin? up." She sliced her second stroke, playing to the sixteenth liole out of bounds, and made a mistake with the next stroke. She took her brassey to the 100 yards seventeenth hole, and sliced fhe ball into some ground under repair. She »ot home in 4, but .her opponent did the hole in bogey (3). The tally was now all square, with one hole to go.' Mrs. Slack cleared the hill covering the green with a fine length ball, but Miss Gorrie drove right into it, and she took three to get on the green, and one putt to approach the hole, and then just missed at bv a hair's breadth. Mrs. Slack going down in 5, and winning fhe match by one stroke. , ' ■ The Donnelly Cup was won by Mrs. Guy "Williams, with thn fine score of 89, which her handicap reduced to 87. She played round with great precision, and the' win was a popular on*. In the junior event Mrs. Donald and Mts. Bruce, with n«t scores of 89, tied for first plaio. In conjunction with the Donnelly Cup, a teams' match was held, the Wellington A team proving winners with 38t points, being far ahead of fe second;. team, ChristchuTch A.
