The present position of affairs in the Auckland General Labourers''.Union is that they are without a president, a majority of members at a general meeting having decided that Mr. JP. Fraser was not eligible to lold office. It is understood that Mr. Fraser will leave Auckland for the Gisborne district to-morrow to carry out organising work for the Federation of Labour, he being a. member of the executive committee of that body. No steps are being taken in the meantime t6 fill the vacant office of president of the Labourers' Union. At the next gttieral meeting a motion to amend the by-laws to make Mr. leaser's position legal will- bo dbcusstd. There, is. some chance also that a motion affirming Mr. leaser's eligibility still to hold office will come up for consideration, although it is possible that Mr. Fraser may let the mat-, ter drop. SAILORS' INSTITUTE OPENED. Christchurch, September t. The ceremony of opening the King George V Seamen's Institute at Lyttelton took place this afternoon. A large number of visitors.were present, including Commander 1 , . .1. Stopford, of H.M.S. Tioneer, and bluejackets from the. warship, while seamen from vessels in port attended in goodly numbers. The ceremony was performed by the Hon. i\ n. B Fisher, Minister for Marine.

The hearing of the case against Patrick Macmanemin, charged with having stolen the well-known racing mare Soultona, concluded at the Supreme; Court last eyenine The jury, after a retirement of citrht minutes, returned a verdict of not guilty, and Macmanemin was discharged. ."HE WAS TfRED OF LIFE."
