Mr. A. E. Mabin, president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, leaves for Auckland to-day. He will be absent from Wellington for about ten days.
Mr. Justice Edwards leaves for New Plymouth about tho end of the present week to preside at the' Supreme Court sittings, which open on Tuesday next. Mr. W. M. Singleton, Assistant Dairy Commissioner, who is at present on a trip to Canada, is expected back bv the Mβkura, which is duo at Auckland from Vancouver on September 24. Mr. Charles Schilsky, the examiner for tho Trinity College of Music, is to play the Max Brncli Concerto with the Wanganni Orchestral Society to-morrow evening. Mr. Ernest. Parkes is to be the vocalist of the evening. Mr. Leon Cohen left for Wangamii yesterday, to take part in tho concert as solo oboe player. Mr. Justice Cooper has gone from Auckland to Hamilton, where the Supreme Court sittings are being held this week. A London Press Asfeiation message states thnt Mr. W. S. Penley, tho wellkuown comedian and theatrical manager, is seriously ill.
Messrs. A'. J. Curtis (J. J. Curtis and Co.), George Cooper (1\ Cooper, Ltd.), and J. J. Bourke were elected members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce yesterday. .
Mr. David M'Farlane was la.st evening re-elected president of the Wungamii Chamber of Commerce.—Press Association.
. At yesterday's meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce the chairman (Mr. A. E. Mabin) moved, and'it was resolved:—"That tho chamber records with regret tho death of Mr. A. J. M'Tavish, meuibor of the chamber from 1875 to 1888, and president in 18841S85; of Mr. T. G. Macarthy, a member from 1878 to date of his death (M years), and of Mr. Charles Bateson, a member from 1903 to date of his death, and directs that letters of condolence be sent to tho relatives of , the deceased gentlomen." Speaking of Mr. Macarthy, the chairman said that the munificence of his bequests to the province had established his nam« for all time in this city. ,
;•' (Mr. 1 James Hi .Pnuling, manager, of the Masterton Implement Company, and' one of the best known and most highly respected residents of Masterton, died yesterday afternoon after n, short illness. Deceased, who was fifty-two years of ajje, came to Masterton from Ashburton twelve years ago. He had served on the Borough Council and other local bodies, and, at the time of his death, was president of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society and a member of the Trust Lands Trust nnd Masterton I'iro Board. Hβ leaves a widow and nine children. Mr. H. G. Hill left for Nelson yesterday, and will bo away for about a week. A Press Association message received from London last night states that Captain C. Shawc, of the Rifle Brigade, has been appointed aide-de-camp to Hie Earl of Liverpool, who is to succeed Lord Islington as Governor of New Zealand. Captain Shawe was for some years aide-de-camp to General Sir Neville Lyttelton, Coiumander-in-Chiof in Ireland.
