IN OLD QUEBEC.
Among iho many stirring; and romantic stories of heroism connected with Quebec Province • (says a writer m the "Queen") is that related of Madclino of Verchere, who, at Hie ago of fourteen, successfully held her father's manor against the fierce Iroquois Indians. The story, though well known to Canadians, may be new to sonic of the readers of this paper, and cannot fail to interest all to whom deeds of gallant daring appeal.. 'It was in the year 1G92, late in the autumn, and the tenants of Verchere, _a' manor in the vicinity of Montreal, were, in the fields gathering a late harvest. Jladelino, then fourteen, was left alone with her .brothers in the fort, her father being away from home. Sho was soing towards the river St. Lawrence, accompanied by a serving man, when she discovered, "in swift sand silent approach, a band of -much-dreaded Iroquois. ; could barely rush bach, crying "Arms! Arms!" to warn those in the fields, and shut and bar the stockade, when the stealthy foe was upon her. She organised her "garrison," which consisted of two brothers younger than herself, a few women, and-two old men, one of whom was just about to blow up the powder magazine, and ilcstrov them all, rather llian allow (hem to fall into the hands of the savages. Inspired bv her courage and promptitude, all promi.-ed aid and loyal obedience to her as chief, tiring the only canon in Iho fort,, she intimidated the Indians, but did not drive them away. On the second day. seeing a canoe Hearing the shore, which she concluded contained friends, she determined to warn, them of the presence of Indians, and as no one else had the. courage to go, went herself alone to the shore, deceiving the Indians bv her Very boldness, and rushed her friends into the fort. For a week they liept the savages at bay, Madclino arran»in" signals and sentries so-cleverly us to" create the appeanico of a strong garrison, and meanwhile some field labourers who had escaped at. heT warning crv and had gone in search of succour, arrived from Montreal with a band strong enough to attack and rout the Iroquois and relieve Iho noble girl and her valiant "girrison." Madeline of Verchere is a • favourite heroine of Canadian song and story.
