AVallis local manager for the New Zealand ant African S.N. Co.:—"Our principals ii Syiliiey write 11s that the Chamber o Commerce there are endeavouring to hav< magistrates empowered, when dealing witl persons found guilty of pilfering cargo 1.0 givo the offenders a term of imprison ment without the option of a fine. A the tamo time they suggest that wo shoulc get ,the Wellington Chamber of Commerci to act in conjunction with other chain hers of commerce in the principal citiei in the Dominion, with the view to magis tratcs being vested with the same powei in New Zealand, and request us to asi your chamber to take fcho matter up and communicate with the Chamber ol Commerce in Sydney. We therefore dc sire to ask the co-operation of your cham ber in dealing with 'the trouble." Ou receipt of the letter the secretarj (Mr. H. I). Victory) wrote to Sydney, anc received a reply, ivliich was asked to bi treated as confidential. It was decided to bring the sucgesHni embodied in the above letter before th< Minister for Justice.
