Tho Hon. O. SAM I~EL seconded tho motion. "Ju tho death of tho Mikado, tlio Emperor of Japan," lie said, "tho world has lost one of the greatest men that have figured in its history." The motion was carried. A resolution.expressing the sense of tho Council of tho service rendered to Ihe State by the lion. R. Oliver, and of sympathy with his witlow, was agreed to r.n the motion of the Hon. H. D. Hell.' Tho deceased gentleman was ail ex-member of llio House of Representatives, and he sat for . ten years as ;i member of tho Legislative Council, resigning in 1901. A. similar . resolution was affirmed in respect of tho death of Mr. Eugene .T. O'Connor, who had also served as a member of both-Chambers. The Hon. 11. D. HELL asked members to allow all ordinary business on tha Order Paper to stand over, and moved that tho Council, at its rising, should adjourn until 2.30 p.m. the next day, nut of respect for the memory of ihe Mikado and the two late members of tho Council above-mentioned. It would bp necessary, however, to pass tho Imprest Supply Bill that day., The Council adjourned at 3.5 p.m., and resumed at S p.m. Tho Imprest Supply Bill passed through all its stages. The I ion.: H. D. BELL (Minister for Internal Affairs) announced that his •Excellency had been pleased, on the adviao of his Ministers, .to appoint tho Hon. T. Mackenzie to be High Commissioner for New Zealand in London. The Hon. K. A. Loughnan, the Hon. J. 11. Jenkinson, and the Hon. W. T. Carncruss severally congratulated the Hon. T. Mackenzie on his appointment, and tho Government on tlio wisdom of the choice Blade. Tho Council rose 'at B.S p.m.
