MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of (lie Wellington Education Board was' held yesterday, there being present: The chairman (Mr. Robert Lee), and Messrs. ,T. Kebbell, A. W. Hogg, W. Freeman', W. 11. Field, J. G. W. Aiiken, and W. C. Buchanan, M.l'. The financial statement disclosed a small debit balance oi' .fill 12s. lflil.—(lie debit balance for the previous month was JJ27O Ms. Bd. The resignations of (be following teachers were accepted:—Miss 1?. Wcisner, Tane; Miss A. Cray, Training College; Miss G. Roynell, Mastertoii; Miss 11. Speedy, I'etone West; Miss Wright, Pelono West; Mr. Jf. E. Caddiek, Newtown; Mr. JC. M'Kenzie, Kaiwaka'. GRANTS FOR SCHOOLS. Applications for grants for works, supplies, etc., were dealt with as follow, in Urms recommended by tho Works nnd I-franco Committee:—
Grants authorised:—Jfakara. residence, porch over door; Kaiwnrra, extra fencing, dangerous bank; Rongokokako, grant for metalling round new building and residence improvements; Masterton, renewals; Dalefield, one chain picket fonce, half cost; Kilbirnie, half cost fonce; Waterfalls, levelling £7, metalling £3, new residence; Kaiwaiwai, extra cost, filling and metalling; Whiteiuan's Valley, drainago; To Aro Infants', new floors to latrines; Johnsonville, sheathing south wall and porch over south entrance; Makuri, subsidy for wood shed; Muritai, chimney flashing and ventilation; Normal, appliance for fuel saving; To Nui, subsidy for fencing; Fernridge, improved lighting, removal of galleries, etc.; Kaitawa, metalling; Tnueru, water service; Pabiatua, half cost ground improvements: Mauricevillo West, ground improvements. The Clerk of Works wos authorised to estimate and report on applications from: ILutt, storm drain; Brooklyn, latrine; South Wellington, heating service; Martinborough, septic tank; Petone, greenhouse; Hukanui, replacement tool shed; Jlangaone, subsidy on ;£3 ss. for ground improvements, etc.; Mangahao, subsidy on fencing; Jlangamairc, picket fence, eastern side of school; Greytown, Winds; Mat.ir.nva, improved lighting; Makerua, erection of residence; Newtown, latrino accommodation, renewal.
It was also resolved, vritli regard Co tho following: Ngaio, application for fencing grant of_£U or ,£ls.—Declined. IfaiwaiWai, residence.—Application to bo liiado for a grant for reconstruction of kitchen and scullcry and for erection of bathroom. Upper Hutt.—Alternative tenders to bo invited for: (a) House for removal; (b) section; and (o) house and sectionsite of old school. Desks.—lmprovements to desks to be made on tho recommendation of the inspectors. Newlands, request of Johnsonville School Committee for erection of school at Newlands.—No new facts adduced such as would justify the present renewal of tho application, which has been already refused. Library subsidies were authorised for Khandallah (.£1 los.) and Opalci (16s. 6d.). OTHER MATTERS. A letter was received from tho UnderSecretary of tho Public Works Department conveying the information that tho Department, in conjunction' with tho Railways Department, would renew the bridge at Cross Creek, giving access to tho local public school. The application of 6. Hemp for a transfer of his scholarship from Nelson to Christchurch was granted. ! It was decided to closo tho Horokiwi School, the district round about having been depopulated of children owing to the removal of families. It was reported that temporary arrangements had been made for the carrying on of tho secondary classes at Gre.vtown District High School—tho building having been burnt down—and that the School Committee was prepared to contribute «£l2O for furnishing tho new' building. The chairman said that tho board had stretched its generosity with regard to the designs—which were considered in committee—for the new school building. Mr. Buchanan was of opinibn that the building should bo constructed either of brick or concrete.
