ARNST DEFEATED.

BARRY WINS EASILY, THE NEW ZEALANDER CLEAN ROWED OUT. RACE IN ROUGH WATER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, July 29. Tile race between Barry and Arnst for tho world's sculling championship and a stake of ,£IOOO was rowed on the Thames to-day, and resulted in the defeat of Arnst, tho present champion. Tho morning came in- wet and squally, and tho water between Hammersmith and Barnes was expected to be vory bad. Before the start tho wind was dropping. Despito a succession of heavy showers, the riverside was thronged. "Bossy" Phelps, from a cutter, steered for Arnst, and Tom Green acted similarly for Barry. The champion was a very warm (favourite. Arnst Wins the Toss. Arnst won tho toss and chose tho Surrey side of the river, because tho southerly wind was likely to give shelter at Chiswick. Tho men got away at the first attempt, and Amst, pulling powerfully, thirtyeight strokes to the minute, was soon clear, his opponent going quietly at thirty-six. The champion led by a length at the boathouses. At Craven Steps Arnst pulled past a length and a half in front in 2min. 50sec. The mile was covered in -imin. 58sec. Barry was pulling beautifully. Arnst was apparently taking overmuch out of himself. The challenger spurted at the Old Crab Tree and drew almost level. Hammersmith Bridge (15 miles) was made in Bmin. 30sec. The water was rongh. Barry drew level, and at Biffen's was a quarter of a lengtli ahead. In tho more sheltered water at Chiswick, Arnst again drew clear, and led by a length—time, It ruin. 3sec. Barry Gets Away. Barry, by a lino effort, closed on the leader and led by one-third of a .longth at Duke's Meadow. Thence he went right away, having the smoother water, Arnst labouring in heavy water. ' At Barnes (3J miles), which Barry passed in 19min. 23sec., Arnst was palpably tiling. The challenger led by three lengths; Arnst, still tiring, tried to spurt, but stopped, Barry winning by 100 yards in 23min. Bsec. Arnst stopped rowing at the Brewery, dead beat. ' Sir George Ecid, Commonwealth AgentGeneral. congratulated Barry on his magnificent victory. ■ Barry stated tlftt, finding ho held Arnst after they had gone a mile, ho had no doubt of his'ability to win.
