PEACE OR WAR?
THE RISE. 08. THE YELLOW MAN.. .On. the subject of "The Momentous Movement in tho East," the Rev. P. L. Paton, M.A., 8.D., delivered an interest- 1 ing lecture at the Y.H.C.A, last evening, on behalf of the Hyderabad (India) Mission. Mr. J. G-. W. Aitken presided. During fcho course of his remarks, Mr. Paton dwelt upon the forcta which were at present shaping the future development - of Eastern politics, and declared that tho gradual awakening of China, the spread of education in that immense empire, taken together with the prestige of her sister nation, Japan, would bring about a situation which would inevitably work a , reckoning with tho European nations. It 'was certain that if some greater influence 'did not predominate when that time came, this reckoning would bo settled by . an appeal to' arms, tho iihniediato bono jof contention boiug the possession of Manchuria. Such a conflict would not • only be a war for the mastery .of Manchuria—it. would be a-world struggle. The only_ hope of averting such an appalling contingency was to apply such a stimulus to the peaceful forces of the Christian missions that differences would be settled by peaceful measures. The metier of the civilised Western natiops was to sipply that stimulus by sending tho missionaries out to tho fighting line. (Applause.) Mr. Paton also enlarged upon the remarkable progress which had been made with . tho Christianising of Korea, onco the most hopelessly benighted of the Eastern 1 nations, now regarded by its neighbours with.tho greatest respect. At the conclnsion of the lecture, which was. followed with keeu, interest, tho lecturer. was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, on tho motion of the chairman'.
