' Constance M'Cracken, who, on Saturday, was ordered to come up {or sentence when called upon, was to-day sentenced to detention for two years'' reformative treatment. Tho lad's mother offered to take charge of the girl, but the latter escaped from the ferry steamer before sailing on Saturday night, rejoinc the lad on tho wharf, and was rearrestod. THE WALLINGFORD CASES. Wanganui, July 29. The youth named George Albert Walwho was last week committed or sentence on charges of theft of jewelery, valued at £70, was again before tho -ourt this morning, charged with gnolbreaking, and, in addition, thefts of jewellery valued at £120. Ho pleaded guilty to all tho charges, and was committed lor sentence to the Wellington Supreme Court. THE TIMBER TRADE. Greymouth, July 29. fcawnnliers and timber exporters nre suflenng owing to tho shortage of steamers a> carry timber to outside markets. It is estimated that sawn timber to the value of nearly £20,000 is lying awaiting, shipment. The shortage of tonnage is at tributed to tho extraordinary demand for coal throughout tho Dominion, taxing the shipping companies to their utmost capacity. Some relief is expected next week, when two steamers, carrying nearly a million sup. feet each, will load for outside markets, but it is reckoned that it will be a month or so before tho pressure ia relieved. 1 CADETS-NOT SCOUTS. ~ ~ ... At a meeting of the Napier branch of tho Teachers' Institute held on Saturday resolutions were passed, approving of the present systom of junior cadets, and strongly protesting against tho eubstituhon therefor of Scouts.
