Lord Furness, h«ad of the Furness, Withy Company, shipbuilders, at a meeting of tho company at Hartlep'ool, proposed the amalgamation of his company's pension fund and that of tlio Old HarHopool seamen, to which ho had given i 120,000. A wider scheme for training boys under expert tutors preliminary to entering tho company's service as apprentices on tho steamships, was needed, Lord Furness said, and ho urged tho company to vote .£10,000" for this object, and lie would contribute .£IO,OOO. Ho considered it a serious reflection that so ' few national facilities were given, to sea training.
