BURGLARIES IN AUCKLAND.
FOUR ARRESTS. IBy Telegraph.—Special Corrcsßondent.l Auckland, June 30. Tho Auckland police have now arrertei four men on charges connected with the recent burglaries. Of these men, Paul Eugene Serim is a married man of 38 years of age, with a wife and two children. Ho is a dark-haired and ■ olive complexioned Englishman, whose clean-shaven lace, with his clean-cut features, is decidedly prepossessing. Physically, he is a little over medium stature and of imisculnr build, being of the alert, capablo type of man. His career, it is understood, mis been a varied one, for something like a year he has dono casual labouring work cm tho wharves, where he is well Known, for ho had nn nll'ablo nature and made many friends and acquaintances, and it had been noticed that, he had lost no opportunity of chumming up with • policemen., From his conversation, it has been gleaned that ho had boon for a number of years in AVellington, and that for cloven years he had resided in the United States, where ho followed the picturesqno occupation of a "cowboy." In this connection it is interesting to note that one of his boasts was thrt at ten paces he could, with a revolve , , put fivo consecutive spots on a target within tho space of half a" crown. Thirty years of ago and single, Grant, also has been lor a number of months employed casually, on tho wharves. Ho is a snorter, though not of less powerful build, than is Scrim, and is more rugged and grim looking. As to his race, ho is ft man who has Men service in the British Navy, and has not long been off the Naval Keserve, and has tho reputation of being a. crack shot. It is understood that Serim, and Grant oamo tinder "suspicion almost as far back as three months ago, and on Thursday the watchers proceeded to Serim's house, a rather conspicuous red-painted one, on the rise at tho back of Disraeli Street, in Mount Eden, and arrested him just after he got homo in tho evening. In view of his shooting reputation, Detectives Powell and Cummings gave him no opportunity for doing harm, and they no doubt congratulated themselves on having taken St-rim by surprise, when they found in hi* possession a beautifully built revolver. Thero wero also found in his possession a kit of tools (omprisiug jemmies, files, picklocks, torch,is, and about 100 skeleton keys, adjustable to many patterns of locks In addition to these were found a number of gelignite plugs and dynamite- detonator caps. Thero was no money. Grant was arrested at a houso where he had been living in Ponsonby. Hig wealth consisted of ss. Hid., and there was nothing in tho nature of burglarious toils on him or the premises. Both Scrim, and Grant have been remanded to appear on AVodnosday, on which date Lrnest Kirchim-fa r.iid Charles Eeynolds, tho moi found at midnight on AAednesday in .lh« bar of tho Clarendon Hotel, arc. also duo to appear. Tho last-named two men were also engaged casually as wharf workers.
