The protest'is against what is called tlio "share system," in which a cabman'enters into an agreement' with a cab proprietor, to work under the latter's. orders, but to b®, paid on a share of receipts, by 'which arrangement the provisions of the Cabmen's Award under the Arbitration Act do not apply. In a circular addressed to members Of tho City Council, tho union stated tliat the effect of tho share system was that ; a cabman, who went in as a partner, got no . pay-for overtime. He was responsible for damage to tho vehicle or horse, could bo discharged any time on tho Bpot by tho proprietary partner, got nono of. tlio benefits of compensation under , tho Employers' Liability Act, and was not sent out oa profit-able jobs, on which .wages men were put. '• The Einaiioo Committee of tho City Council. has ,decided to ask three representatives ■ from the union, - nnd three from the livery-stable proprietors, to confer with: it at its next meeting. "
