RECORD OCEAN DEPTH.
THE LATEST SOUNDING,
Bji Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. June. 23, 3.5 p.m.) Berlin, June 22. The survey Ship Planet, when forty knots distant from Northern Mindanao, in the Philippines, obtained a record ocean depth of 32,089 l'ect.
The greatest known depth in tho ocean hitherto has been the Nero Deep, near Gwam. Tho depth there is 31,G00 feot. The greatest heights abovo sea level and the greatest depths below are. of the samo order c-f luaznitude —Mount Everest ri>ing to 29,000 feet. The area of tho great depths at sea is. however, much greater than tho area of the great heights on land. Abovo the height of 20,000 feet there is only about. 12,5A0 square, miles of mountain country): v;hile,'t.hero is.no fewer than 2,100,000 square miles of ocean bottom 0ver.20.000 feet in depth. The greatest depth between Wellington and Sydney is about 10,000 feet. Near tlio Ivcrmadecs a depth of 30,0.30 feet was obtained.
