The chairman slated that the inwea-e in this balance was to lie explained by the fact that (lie board had made large' payments of grants lit the Technical School Hoards at Wellington and I'etone. Referring lo the board's application for a school building at Silverstream, the Kducation Department suggested that tho most elfeclive and economic,• il means of providing for the educational requirements of the Silverstrcam children would be to concentrate then! at the Upper Hutt. An application for a grant for additions at the Upper Tlutt school would therefore be favourably considered. It was decided to renew tho application for a school at Silverstrcam, ajid to point out that the Uutt Valley was being closely settled very rapidly. '"It was agreed, upon the recommendation of Mr. .T, Kebbell and Mr. I', H, Bakowell (inspector), to establish a side school at Arapaepae, up to Standard 11, provided I hat the settlers guarantee an average attendance oi nine pupils, leaving to tho board's inspectors the later question of raising the school to Standard 111. Oil the recommendation of tho chairman and inspectors, it was agreed that if the Pctone West School Committee would provide ,£SO, the board would give ,£IOO for the erection of a suitable, room ill corrugated iron for instruction in .science. It was also agreed to,provide additional cupboard accommodation. The inspectors reported adversely on an application for n school at Castlepoiut, and also reported their opinion that there nas need for au additional room at Pokomaru.
GKANTS AND SUPPLIES. Upon the rccommendafion of Works and Finance Committee, grants were'authorised in respect of the following schools Normal School, gas heating appliances; Alfredton, hot water; Taueru, fencing repairs, gates and blinds; Konini, repairs to fireplaces; Maranui. new grate i'or classroom, half cost fencing; Kaiwaiwai, residence alterations; Mastertou, repairs to cisterns, etc., infants' school; Otski, partition* large classroom; LUetahuna, increased size of shelter sheds, extension, ladders for schools; Khantiailah, new gratej.l'crnridge, residence, papering, etc.; Hamua, IJ-inch boarded fence, latrines; Mauriceville West, fencing repairs; 'l'awa Flat, repairs to sashes, etc.; Scarborough, residence, cleaning cones for tanks; Kuiparoro, repairs and painting roof; Makerua, pipes for storm water drains; Newman, overhauling desks; Mitc'nolltown, improvements, excavation, asphalting, shelter sheds, fencing, etc. (subsidy); Noriuandale, grant for .paths, metalling, etc.; Korokoro, refund, new: tank, basin and fittings; Putara, concreting floor of shed; Upper Hutt. refund to teacher of cost of bath; Cross Creek, new sink, glazing; Martinbmough, grant haif cost conveniences; Dyer. shelter sheds and urinal. The board agrec-d to the disposal of uio old residence, Wflimii-o-mata. The following applications were declined;— Plinnnerion, septic lank, water supply, etc.; Tune, septic tank; llasterton, gas installation. The following were, deferredCarterton, .gas; Tlukanui, conveniences; Pc.rirna, overhaul, etc., clerk of works to visit and report; Wadestoirn, improvements, clerk of works to report. Library subsidies were granted to Pntara ,£l,' and Jfiu'.rioeville M 2s. Id. Plans and specifications for drainage connections at .Bastern Jl.utt were, authorised. It was also resolved that an Additional expenditure be authorised for furniture at Pirinoa; that the proposal of the Maranui Committee for the formation of extra, tennis courts be approved; tl)ut the pioposal for removal of the Matahiwi School be approved; that the chairman Ijo authorised to execute the-Papawai lease; that the time for the payment of the rent of Section 16, Block V, Pnketoi be extended to June 30; that the gallery in the infant department at Carterton be removed; that tho inspector's recommendation' regarding the infant departments -it Carterton and Greytown be ap. proved. ,
