• DEATH OF MULTIFORM.

By Teleerai/h— press Aeeoclatlon-CoDyrieM (Rec. May 28, 9.10 p.m.) Sydnsy, Hay 28-. The thoroughbred stallion Multiform is dead. Multiform was a bay horse by Hotc-h----kiss from Formo, bred at W cKlsigtcn Park by Mr. T. Morrin in 1693 and purchased as a yearling by tho late Mr. j. G. Stead for 230 guineas. As a two-year-old he started eleven times, winning on eight occasions. 11l those days nor^ea running in the same ownership did not. havo to be bracketed on the totalisator, and a great turf sensation was caused when Multiform (hitherto unbeaten) started a hot favourite in the Great Nor.liein Foal Stakes at Ellerslie, and was <.efeat«t by his stable companion, Gold Medallist. At three and four years, Multnorm was invincible, and never lowered his His total winnings amounted to ajmj, and his earnings as a two-year-old m 1696-1897 amounted to <£2761,. and stood as a record until Autumn us finished the piesent season with over .£30(10, His success at the stud in New Zealand was nothing short of phenomenal, and among the most successful of his stock may he mentioned Boniform (unbeaten), ijajtmform (A.J.C. Derby and Nev; Zealandl Cup,, Vice-Admiral (New Zealand Cup). Mullifid (Canterbury Cup and Great Dorbv), Golden Slipper (sold tor 4500 gumpas), 'Sungod, Isolt, Porcelain, Nantiform, etc. At the dispersal sale of the Jaie Mr. Stead's horses, Multiform was sold to Mr. John MacdonaUl, of .south Wales, for 3750 guineas. Since going to the other side, ho has not done so well as formerly.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Br GIENJOB.] There will be racing nest Saturday at Ellerslie and Wingatui, and on Monday at Ofcaki, Ellerslie, and Wingatui. Local sportsmen will be interested principal!} in the Otaki fixture. The Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting is not limited to two days as stated recently. It extends over three. It was tho autumn moeliing that was reduced to a couple of days as the resuK of tho Racing Commission report. A private letter received from Auckland'yesterday stated that a lot of rain had fallen there, and the going promised to be 011 the heavy side tor Saturday s racing. This will favour Presently and Napper, who are by Birkenhead, but it will be all against Waipntere and The Naliivc. Discussing Presently, a wellknown Aiicklander recently gave it as his opinion that there was no justification for tho support accorded him and the wholo reason of it may be found to be that tho people behind the horse aro good bettors. "He is small to successfully carry such a big weight over two miles and a half," argued tho northerner, "and Saturday will prove this." A horse that was surrounded by a lot of boom last season was Soultiform and his subsequent unsuccessful trip to Melbourne where ho went wrong did not lessen tho glamour attached to his name. The Soult gelding figures amongst the acceptances for the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie oil Saturday, but he can have little chance of success over a. seven-fur-long course as ho has been up no time and oil latest advices he had done practically no fast work. Tho ranks of the horsemen are to bo further depleted nest season when it is stated that W. Young, W. Price, R. Hatch, S. Reid, and H. Telford will give up Hiding and take out trainer's licenses. The first-named intends building stables

at Feeding and lias been promised a lot of horses to prepare there. Price, Hatch, and Telford are likely to reside at Trenj tham, and Reid -trill train probably at Awapmii for a well-known Auckland sportsman. Tho friends of J. H. Prosser will regret to hoar of the death of his wife, witch occurred lato on Monday night. The Otaki mentor, F. Higgott, lias a hoiso engaged in each flat race of tho Otaki meeting next week. Immediately after the Wanganui meeting I!. Hatch repairetf to Otaki to assist Higgott in the preparation of his large team. Torbelle broke down very badly when competing in the hack hurdles at Wanganui, and as the trouble is in what was originally a sound joint, it is unlikely that the Torpedo gelding mil be persevered with further. Tho Porirua horse has I been a great disappointment on tho race tracks, and out of numerous starts he has ' only been placed on one occasion, and i tha't was when lie ran second to Ribstone ' Pippin at Wanganui at tho Cup meeting I last year. Pi. Hatch yesterday received a telegram asking him to accept tho mount on Draft in the hack races at Ellerslio, but as ho is fully engaged at Otaki on tho samo date another rider will have to be found for the New Plymouth horse. The stallion Deerstalker, by Cianvanald —Weathercye, died recently in South Canterbury. He was a full-brother (o Cannie Chic-l and Signalman. Mr. (!. P. Donnelly's English-bred stallion Gold Reef by Bend Or—Crucible, was found dead in his box at his owner's stud, Hawkc's Bay, one day last week. Gold- Reef was bred in 188S, and was imported to New Zealand by Mr. J. 0. Hayward in 189G, in company with Soult. | Among his progeny were Gold Crest, Gold Crown, Gold Lace, El Dorado, GoJd Seal, The Rand, Ballarat, and Auratus, whoso successes were gained in ail kinds of races, on the flat, over hurdles, and in steeplechases. Several horses with engagements in the Great Northern Steeples on Monday Kay be given, a public schooling in the Maiden Steeplechase on Saturday. Dorando, Glenmoi;e, and Hautero are good jumpers, and may be allowed to remain in their boxes, but Appin, Taiaha. Tui Cabobau, Tho Spaniard, Golden Glow, and Zante could all do with a race over the course. Te Ptiia, who gave rather an inglorious exhibition in the Hack Hurdles at Wanganui, has been accepted for in the Cornwall Handicap' at Ellerslie on Saturday, but her recent form does not give tho idea that she will claim tho attention of tho judge. Thore will bo two steeplechase events on each day of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting in July. The Wellington Steoplcchaso and the July Steoplechase have each been increased by 100 sovs., the former being now worth COO sovs. and the latter 300 sovs. The Parliamentory Handicap mid the Winter Oats Handicap have each been increased by 50 sovs., and tliero are other minor increases in the prize money. Sir Tristram, who is among tho acceptors for the Pankawa Cup at Otaki ilex' Monday, has'won tho event on two occasions, and on another occasion he acted as runner-up to California. The acceptances for bolls the principal races at the Otaki meeting are very sat isfactorv, and if the other races have filled as well there will l>? more than enough starters on the day.
