TRAINS TO TE ARO.

LEAGUE FORMED IN FAVOUR. '• There appears to be.a fear that the Authorities may take serious notice of the proposal to do away with the Te Aro railway station, and a large section of the community, particularly those who have • Interests in the vicinity of. the station are determined to see that the line is not dispensed with- A number of tho latter met yesterday afternoon, and formed what is to be known as the Wellington Railway Extension and Improvement League. There were present: Messrs. Jas. Hutchen, J. P. Luke, H. MXe'od, J. J. Clarke, F. G. Bolton, Horatio Nelson, W. 7. Thompson, Walter Brown, Thos. Baliinger, W. Bnrbridge, and Williams, Dr. Newman, M.P., the Hon. J. E. Jenkinson, : ind the.Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C. Mr. Leigh Hunt occupied the chair. It was proposed by Mr. J. P. Luke, and lecondcd by Mr. Ballinger, that thoso present form themselves into the Wellington Railway Extension and Improvement League, with power to add to their number. Both gentlemen urged that it would be worse than folly to dream of doing away with a railway line which extended to tho real centre of Wellington, which, was close to the busiest parts of tho commercial city, within a biscuit throw of sll tho big food markets, and ft stones throw from the wharves. The To Aro railway station had not been a success iecause the Department had never given it a chance. What was wanted was ample goods-shed and luggage accommodation, and an extension of the express trains from Auckland to To Aro. Now people were brought all the way from ono end of the island to be dumped at tho extreme end of the city, instead of being brought right into it, as would bo tho case did the To Aro stntion serve as the terminus of tho Main Trunk line. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Leigh Hunt (chairman), W. J. Thompson, F. G. Bolton, J. P. Luke, H. M'Lojd, and the Hon. J. E- Jenkinson, was appointed , to issue a petition for the signatures of the public against tho abolition of the Te Aro Tailway station, and praying that it be developed by the establishment of a goods depot and an improved passenger service.'./
