WANGANUI JOTTINGS.
(By Telceraph.-Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, Jfay 2. The shooting season did not open well for Wanganui sportsmen, the weather being bad and game scarce, and the bags consequently small. Jlr. C. 11. Lawn, of tho Public Works Department, New Plymouth, has been appointed resident engineer to the Gonviile Town Board. That body will probably bo converted into a borough shortly, the proposal having been hurried up by the provisions of the Local Government Dill regarding the abolition of town districts. The St. GeoiSo Society of Wanganui held its annual reunion last night, tho affair passing off very successfully. At the annual meeting held prior to the social function, the lJev. Herbert Reeve was elected president, the appointment of a secretary being left to the committee. Tho annual report, which showed a successful year, stated that during the year employment had been found in Wanganui for 20 immigrant Englishmen. The Hon. 11. G. Ell, Postmaster-General, paid his first official visit to Wanganui yesterday afternoon, and to-day received a deputation and went into various matters connected with the Post and Telegraph Department. In reply to a Chamber of Commerce deputation," 110 promised to obtain a report immediately on tho proposed Waiiganui-Kaetihi telephone line, stating that he saw no difficulty in the way of putting it up. He gave a. similar reply with reference to the Wanganni-Pipiriki telephone, and promised to bring the matter of tho Wanganui-Ilaetihi railway before the Jlinister for Uailways. In reply to a request that the midday mail for Wellington should close at a later hour than at present, the Jlinister stated that a sum had been authorised for the motor convcyance of mails from Wanganui to Arnmoho, which would enabie later closing to be observed. Jlr. Ell also stated to a that he would have street telephone bureaux on the slot system established in Wanganui, and that he intended to do all possible to facilitate telegraph and telephone communication with the back-blocks.
