J n view of further purchases from tlin iiiuds publicly (subscribed, the Coaneil of the Academy has decided to ask all adult visitors to state, in the order of their preference, the MX unsold pictures in Hie Baillie collection that they would; like to hare bought for the National Gallery. For this purpose, voting cards have been prepared, and on* wjl! !>e handed to each visitor to the exhibition, to b« filled in with the numbers of tho paintings they prefer, and then deposited' in a ballot-box when leaving the gallery. The result of each day's voting will bo noted and published, so that each visitor may know how his or her selections (stand' in the popular favour. Season ticket hoUk-rs will he entitled to \-ote once. The voting will commence to-day, and the com mil tee of selection will endeavour togive cfVeet to the popular wish as revealed by the votes.
Another hnmlhumc addition was made to-day to tho collection of pictures (kstiiied for the National Gallery. ' The donor was Mr. J. Studholme, of Rutuiu!.who purchaned s'or presentation a muchndmirod picture by Bertram I'riesrniaH, entitled "The Brook." Mrs. aiid Miss Joseph have Bolccted the picture they wish to present to the National -Gallery, and thtir choice has , fallen on one of the jtopular pointings in the exhibition, a cliarniing harbour rfudj by Tcrrick Williams. As the price of. this picture is X'lo in excess of tlio amount previously donated (Jt&l)), theij - contribution will be increased by that sum. The council of the academy also acMptcd for the National Gallery a picture painted by Mrs. Jlair (»ee Miss h. K, Sperry), entitled "Italian Ucatht-rd." It was exhibited in Wellington some years ago, nnd has hung for .several yearo in tho A«c.kland Art Gallery. The presentation was made by Miss IC. A. Hair, daughter of tho artist, who is leaving for England by th« lk-muera to-day.
