THE PREMIERSHIP.
WHY MR. MILLAR DID NOT WANT IT. (By TeleEraph.-l'ress Association.) Dunedin, April 25. A meeting of the Hon. J. A. Millar's Dunedin and Koslyji committees was held to-night, nt his rcquesi, to hear a statement as to the circumstances under which he declined to proceed to the final nomination for the. position of Prime Minister at the caucus recently held in Wellington." 'Die meeting was held in private. Mr Millar was very frank in his statement. He said that in his opinion the l'dntion of parties at present is n> as fo render it impossible for tho business of the country to Iks carried on satisfactorily, and that unless a party could be found having a substantial working majority, it was in the best interests of the Dominion that an election should be held as soon as possible. He requested (lie members of tho committee to allow him a freo hand in future, promising he would not jn any way depart from tlio principles which he had advocated in the past. Tho meeting, which was most enthusiastic, decided unanimously: "That this meeting desires to express its complete confidence in Mr. Millar, and gives him a free hand to act in future as he thinks best in interests of Otago and the Dominion of New Zealand."
